My First Semester at Wayne State University

I excelled at writing as a child and unintentionally caught a lot of attention in it through avenues such as writing evaluations at school, stories I left on tables throughout my house, the church, friends, and family. Yet by the time I graduated high school, I psyched myself out of being able to make a healthy income from it. I spent my late teens and early twenties traveling and meeting interesting people.
After snagging a job at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo and settling down for a bit, I decided to go to college for Nursing. After all, I'm a compassionate person who feels comfortable in high pressure situations, and it's a safe job that provides an instant salary upon graduation.
I attended Western and even though I knew it was going to be tough, I didn't expect to work the hardest I've ever worked in school and in life, then still be faced with roadblock after roadblock after roadblock, getting into the program. I suffered intensely through the rigorous science courses and dreamt of being able to pursue an academic program that would showcase my artistic gifts with ease, instead of torturing me, like Chemistry had been doing.
I took a semester off and when boarding a plane to visit Bozeman, Montana to do some hiking, I picked up a "Traveler's Magazine" and the light bulb went off. I felt a fire of desire burning deep within me and I realized that fear was the only wall between me and pursuing a job as a writer. Yet fear, of not getting into nursing school, drove me to work the hardest I've ever worked in my life. Fear can be quite the motivator...so here I am.
I'm a transfer student into Wayne State University as a declared journalism major, with a brilliant mentor who has more experience and willingness to teach than I could have even hoped for. I'm just a girl pursuing her dream job, settling near her home town,  which is rather radical, for me. And I feel more ready than ever!
